Breathing is an involuntary function of the human body that is done with the help of the respiratory system of our bodies. Since the respiratory system functions at the standard level still, some of us must have a good breathing rate, whereas few of us must be facing breathing issues. There are many causes behind this and fortunately some effective treatments too. However, one of the easiest ways is breathing exercises to help the lungs function better.

Benefits Of Breathing Exercises

1) Pursed Lip Breathing

Pursed lip breathing is one of the easiest breathing exercises to improve lungs mechanism and breathing altogether. It helps relieve breath shortness by slowing the breath rate and improves the exchange rate of oxygen and carbon dioxide.

All You Need Is To:

  • Sit or lie with a straight back and relax your shoulders
  • Inhale via the nose for approx. 2 seconds and let the air move into your abdomen. Try filling your abdomen with air rather than just lungs.
  • Contract your lips and breathe out slowly. Do it twice as long as you inhale.
  • By the time you can increase the increased & exhale counts.

2) Diaphragmatic Breathing

The name has it all! Diaphragmatic breathing exercises are usually recommended to people suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease to improve the breathing rate and the efficiency of the diaphragm.

Steps To Do:

  • Lie down or sit on the flat surface
  • Relax your shoulders by shifting them downwards away from the ears.
  • Keep one hand on the stomach, and another on the chest.
  • Breathe in through the nose (do not push yourself, take it lightly)
  • After a while, purse your lips like sipping from a straw. Slowly exhale within 4 seconds. You will feel like your stomach is contracting
  • Repeat it as many times as you can.

3) Lion Breathing

It is an interesting and entertaining exercise for breath-related issues.

Let’s See How One Can Perform This:

  • Sit in a comfortable position.
  • Lean slightly forward, keep your hand on the knees or the floor and spread your fingers widely.
  • Inhale via your nose
  • Open your mouth widely, stick out your tongue, and stretch it to your chin
  • Exhale carrying the breath across the tip of your tongue
  • While exhaling, create a sound ‘ha’ like a roaring lion (coming from deep within your abdomen)
  • After that, breathe normally for a while and repeat this exercise at most 7 times.
  • In the end, do deep breathing for 1-3 minutes
